01 Apr 1984 - Paul Ritchie at the National Junior Championships at Kilmacow

Archive: Oliver Thomas Snr

Donegal Democrat dated 01 Apr 1984

Paul Ritchie made the long trip south for the National Junior Championships last weekend. Paul is far from being fully fit yet but this was his last opportunity to compete as a junior at cross country so he took it. He finished 42st which is a long way short of his potential if in form. It has been a bad year so far but there is better days ahead.

26 Feb 1984 - Danny McDaid in first ten in National Senior Cross Country

Archive: Oliver Thomas Snr

Danny's 10th place finish in the National Senior Cross country Championships in Kilmacow last Sunday went somewhat unnoticed in the national press but in his two year absence from the country scene at national level, he would seem to have lost little ground finishing far ahead of some with World Cross Country Championship places in mind. A slower than usual start for him had him making up ground from the fifties, but once he really got going he enjoyed himself and was fair flying at the finish. His stamina is in no doubt and he has seven more weeks of good training ahead of him for the National Marathon.

25 Feb 1984 - Ulster Schools Title for Sacred Heard Girl

Archive: Oliver Thomas Snr

Piece from Donegal Democrat dated 01 Apr 1984

Sacred Heard Intermediate Girls won the Ulster Schools Cross Country Title at Mallusk today. For these girls it ia their third such title in three years as they won the under 15 title for the past two years. Ulster Senior Champion Theresa McKenna was out in front from the start, with Siobhan Gallagher of the Sacred Heart always in the leading group. for Siobhan it was another consistent race. Claire Carlton from Belfast tried everything to get clear as the race progressed, but without success. Siobhan used her superior finishing speed over the last 300m to finish a clear second.

Meanwhile, Philomena Gallagher and Sheila Reynoulds were threading their way through the field aware that it was a good team run, a rare enough experience for Ballyshannon athletes. Philomena finished 9th with Sheila 13th. Sharon McGowan was happy with her 56th place. With three to score Sacred Heart had an easy win over Carndonagh Comprehensive School, 24 points to 48.

Sacred Heart U15 finished 6th which was fine for their relatively inexperienced trio of Sinead Gallagher, Pamela Zarb and Michelle O'Reilly. The girls ran a very sensible race and there will be other days provided they follow a proper apprenticeship.

Fiona McNulty was 76th in the Minor Girls race.
