23 Mar 1986 - Martin O'Halloran at irish School's Trials in Cabinteely, Dublin

Martin O'Halloran of De La Salle, Ballyshannon was fourth in the 'Irish Schools Trials' at Cabinteely in Dublin last Saturday. Two weeks earlier, Martin was 6th in the' Irish Schools Finals' at Boyle. These two runs virtually assure him of his place on the 'Irish Schools Team' for the International at Lincoln in the English Midlands on April 12th.

Martin's aim last Saturday was to finish in the top eight. He was always in the top group. By the second the three 2000m laps two athletes had gone ahead and Martin was in the following group of three.

The race remained like this until with 1000m to go this group of three began to break up. Martin ran a very gritty race and with a few dozen runners trying to squeeze into the top eight, he did very well to finish 4th.

Martin will become the first De La Salle athlete to get on an 'Irish Athletics Team', The fact that he has come through to this level of athletics is mainly due to the system in Ballyshannon and South Donegal and the encouragement of his training partners Philomena Gallagher and damien Gallagher.

Rena Brogan of the Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town showed tremendous improvement from the Ulster Final when she ran in the girls trials. She finished 21st which was only 32 seconds behind the winner Sonia O'Sullivan. Rena is still eligible next year and I believe she is an athlete to note for the future.
