Abbey Vocational School Success at Ulster & All Ireland Schools Track & Field Championships, 2007

 

 

On Friday last, at the Abbey Vocational School in Donegal Town, the Junior Girls quartet of Aoife O’Connor, Amie Brogan, Kitty O’Kennedy and Louise Harvey placed two historical trophies in the schools trophy cabinet. Principal Emmanuel McCormack and Vice Principal, Colman Lee were at hand to accept the prestigious awards on behalf of the school.

Last summer, on two separate weekends, the 'Abbey Voc Schools Under 15 Girls Team' made their own piece of history when they won the overall 'Ulster Junior Challenge Cup', that dates back to the early 1960’s, at the 'Ulster Schools Track & Field Finals' in Antrim and followed this achievement a week later, on the first Saturday in June, by winning the Relay Cup and finished overall runners-up in the 'All Ireland Schools Finals' decider in Tullamore.

 

At the 'Ulster Track & Field Finals' in Antrim, the AVS Athletes accumulated 46pts to oust Belfast Royal Academy (43pts) and Friends School, Lisburn (42pts) into the minor places.

 

Outstanding individual performances on the day came from Aoife O’Connor, 2nd in both the 100m and Long Jump, Kitty O’Kennedy 2nd in the 75m Hurdles and Louise Harvey, 4th in both the Triple Jump and 75m Hurdles. The culmination of the day was the team’s victory in the 4 x 100m relay with a time of 52.5secs.

On the first Saturday in June, at the 'All Ireland Track & Field Schools Championship' in Tullamore,  St Augustine’s, Dungarvan on 31pts claimed the overall 'Junior Girls Schools Cup' with the Abbey Vocational School a very close 2nd on 30 pts.

 

Individual performances from Aoife O’Connor, 3rd in the Long Jump with 5.22m and 5th in the 100m with a time of 12.99secs. and Kitty O’Kennedy, 3rd in the 75m Hurdles and a superb victory in the 4 x 100m relay with a time of 51.49secs from Crescent College, Limerick, 52.14secs and St Josephs, Castlebar, 52.26secs made it a memorable and historic two weeks for the Abbey Vocational Athletes.
