St. John Bosco Club Athletes enjoy New Experience

 

When Part 3 of the Ulster Indoor Juvenile Championships were held at Magherafelt Councils, magnificent new Meadowbank Indoor Arena, on Sat 15th March,  a group of St John Bosco athletes had a memorable, enjoyable and successful experience.

It was a 7.30 a.m. start - for the twenty plus group – as they made their way through Strabane, across the Sperrin mountains to the mid Ulster town of Magherafelt. The multi sport indoor arena officially opened the previous day, houses a 300metres track and facilities for all field events, got its athletics baptism with relays for all age groups. The St John Bosco Club fielded four teams in various age groups and filled 1st to 4th places when the finals were decided.

 

Pride of place goes to the Girls Under 13 team of Kelly McGrory, Emma Brady, Kate McGowan and Karen Tracey.  They were impressive winners of a re-run 4 x 100m race, in a time of 57.4 secs with Cranford and Shercock filling the minor places. The Girls Under 12 team of Ciara Doogan, Kate McGowan, Katie Hoade and Ruth Gillespie in their first outing can be very pleased with their 2nd place finish –time 63.9secs -behind last years All Ireland Champions, Cranford. Only 0.6 secs separated the teams.

 

The Girls Under 17  4 x 200m  team of Aoife O’Connor, Louise Harvey, Kitty O’Kennedy and Amie Brogan finished 3rd in a time of 1min 53.2 secs  behind Ballymena,1min 48.7secs and Lagan Valley, 1min 51.8secs.

 

The Boys Under 13, 4 x 100m team of Ryan Haughey, Daire Quinn, Jack Nolan and Kalvin McShane, in a very closely run race, finished 4th in a time of 62.2 secs –Glaslough were winners in a time of 60.8secs.The first three relay teams in each age group qualify for the All Ireland’s on 13th April.

 

Individual Events

 

In the speed events- 60metres sprints and hurdles – the club had a positive interest. The Girls Under 12 60metres had four heats with the first in each heat and the three fastest losers qualifying for the final. Ciara Doogan, Kate McGowan, Katie Hoade, Niamh McGrory and Ruth Gillespie all ran very well with Kate in Heat 3 winning impressively. In a closely contested final Katy Mc Gillion, Strabane, 9.1secs was the winner with Roseanna McGuckian, Ballymena and Antrim 2nd and Kate McGowan St John Bosco 3rd -- both timed at 9.2secs.

Kelly McGroary and Emma Brady both qualified for the Under 13 60metres final where they filled 4th and 6th positions.

 

The 60metres Under13 Girls Hurdles had two St John Bosco athletes qualify for the final. Emma Brady and Karen Tracey both got through as fastest losers. The final did not go the form shown in the heats. Emma Brady, led the race until the final 10 metres while Karen Tracey worked her way through the field  to finish third Result 1st  Aislinn McPhillips, Glaslough,10.8secs, 2nd  Emma Brady, St John Bosco  10.8 secs and 3rd  Karen Tracey, St John Bosco, 11.4secs

In the Boys sprints competitions Jarlath Ruane,Under 19, in his first 400m,  ran a superb race to finish 3rd in a time of 54.1secs behind Patrick Bogues, Omagh, 51.8secs and Brian Stevenson, 52 secs. Jack Nolan, Daire Quinn and Calvin McShane all ran very well in the Under 13 - 60metres but did not qualify for the final.

In the field events Ryan Haughey, Boys Under 13 Shot and Katie OGrady Girls Under 12 Shot filled 3rd positions and can be more than pleased with their performances.
