British Sportshall Finals at the N.E.C., Birmingham

Four Club Athletes - Emma Brady, Kelly McGrory, Louise Harvey and Aoife O'Connor were part of Donegal teams that travelled to the British Sporthall Finals in Birmingham on Saturday.

In sport the unexpected is one of the challenges that excite many competitors and supporters. What happened on Saturday in Birmingham certainly was unexpected but did not enthuse the five thousand crowd or the thirteen teams representing regions as far apart as the Shetland and Cannel Island; South Wales, Dorset and Donegal.

Following an uplifting opening ceremony competition began with running events for the Under 13Girls and Under 15 Boys while the field events were started for the Under 15 Girls and Under 13 Boys.

After thirty minutes of competition the track referee called for a time out in the running events. Many athletes had experienced great difficulty sprinting on a surface that was slippy and dangerous. In the following hour numerous meetings took place between the meet director and officials and finally a decision was made to cancel all running disciplines but to continue with the field programme.

Our local athletes put in some great performances in the field.

Aoife OConnor finished 4th in the Girls U15 Long Jump; Emma Brady, GU13, High Jumped 1.20m; Louise Harvey GU15 scored 80 in the Speed Bounce while Kelly McGrory had a 54cm vertical jump.

More questions remain unanswered following this event which over the years has been so successful and enjoyable from a local and Donegal perspective.

Was there not a health and safety check done on the facility prior to the competition? Where do teams that travelled at a lot of expense stand re Insurance?
