Tir Chonaill AC Athletes Success at Tailteann Games in Santry

 

Three Abbey Vocational School, Donegal Town, Athletes were selected on the 'Ulster Inter Provincial Team' for the annual Irish Schools Under 17 Tailteann Games meet at Santry on Saturday last. All three put in outstanding performances against the best from the four provinces.

 

Christopher Doherty, takes pride of place, with his bronze medal winning performance in the Pole Vault. The event was held in blustery and windy conditions. He kept his nerve and competed with great focus and added a bronze medal to his ever increasing list of achievements this season with a best of 2.70metres. Christopher was the youngest athlete in the competition and is eligible for the next two years for the Tailteann Games.

 

Aoife O’Connor and Louise Harvey are also eligible for the competition next year and can be pleased with their performances. Aoife finished 5th in a very competitive Long Jump with a best of 5.09m where Joanna Myles, Ballyclare, 5.87m and Sally Rose Mohan Castlebar, 5.72m both broke a fifteen year old record.  Louise Harvey, also finished 5th in the 300m Hurdles in a time of 47.13 secs. The race was won by Rebecca Nolan, Oranmore, in time of 45.41secs. Later in the afternoon Louise in the company of Rachael Harvey, B.R.A., Christine McMahon, BRA and Joanna Mills, Ballyclare High School won the 4 x 300m relay impressively in a good time of 2mins46.95secs –averaging 41/42 secs.
