Donegal Novice Cross Country Fintra, Killybegs

Sunday 12 October 2008

Our novice men made the start line by a whisker and again it was great to have a team presence at the championships. The team, Richard McCarthy, Noel Thomas, Vinny Duffy, Jonathan Kennedy and Mark Walsh gave their all and were in there battling for team places.

Donegal Un-Even Age Group Cross Country Championships

It was good to see such a large turnout from our young athletes at the 'Donegal Un-Even Age Group Cross Country Championships' held at sunny Fintra on Sunday afternoon.

In their first season competing at cross country, there was great success for our young athletes. There was individual bronze for Kate Keaney in the girls U-17, silver team medals for the U-17 girls and our U-13 girls and boys teams took county bronze medals.

Our U-9 girls were also the top team but in a non championship event there are no team prizes, unfortunately.

First off the mark, from the beach, was our brave U-9 girls and boys and we had super runs from: Emma Rooney, Megan McEniff, Áine Burns, Rachael McGee and Jack Delaney, over what was a tough course for such young athletes. Well done all.

Next up it was the turn of the U-11 girls and boys, also starting on the beach and all with great runs to finish their races: Amie McCafferty, Casey O’Donnell, Kelsie Warron, Rebecca Duffy, Alannah Ward, Megan McGee and Orla Gillespie doing the girls team proud.  The boys: Paul Murphy, Cian McEniff, Niall Carr, Aaron Clarke, Timmy Govorov, Aron Jones and Brendan Gillespie, were superb with all having fine runs.

Moving up to the U-13 age group where again it was great to see teams in both girls and boys. The girls: Katie McCaffery, Sarah Timoney, Ginta Berga and Dearbhla Hoey, were all superb with great runs.  The boys: Adam Brennan, Shane Carr, Ryan Haughey, Daire O’Reilly, Jamie Brennan, Brendan Oates, Roderick McMorrow, David Timoney and Diarmaid Ward all had very good runs and finished well up in the team section.

Moving up to the U-15 age group where the distance became a little longer with all starts on the grass, where our two girls, Kate McCarthy and Claire Brady had excellent runs. The boys, Mark McGuiness, Kieran Curnien, Christopher Doherty, Karl Griffith and Brian Carr were superb with some great individual runs. Our final team of athletes out were the girls U-17 and with a great third place finish by Kate Keaney leading the team of Rose McCauley, Molly O’Gara and Lisa Greene to team medals.
