Tír Chonaill AC – AGM

Friday 24 October 2008

Tír Chonaill Athletic Club held their Annual General Meeting on Friday evening last in the Central Hotel, Donegal Town, with the largest attendance of club members in many years. Welcoming members, outgoing chairperson John Cannon opened the meeting, expressed delight with the turnout and moved to the agenda. All outgoing officers presented their reports to the meeting and with little discussion all reports were accepted. Similar themes and sentiments were expressed by all on the outgoing executive, with the women’s team’s track and field success in winning the 'Premier League Title' the highlight for many. The amalgamation of the juvenile St John Bosco club into one club, Tír Chonaill AC and the newly established training groups for juveniles in the Bundoran/Ballyshannon area, were widely accepted as positive steps in the future of athletics in the South Donegal area, making Tír Chonaill Athletic Club the largest club in the county.

The success of the club’s juveniles at indoor and outdoor track and field, where several Ulster/NI, National and Scottish medals were won, along with the success of our master men and women on the road and over the country and at National track and field was also mentioned. Mary McLoone’s International call ups, her success, along with Geraldine Stewart, in capturing National titles and a new Donegal record in the triple jump were also highlighted, as was the continued growth and development of both facilities and coaching structures within the club.

The media, with particular mention given to the Donegal Democrat, were thanked for their continued support of the club and the club’s webmaster, Ollie Thomas received accolades from all for his trojan, (no pun intended) work in the development, design and fast uploading of information to the club’s website, www.tirchonaillac.com. The club’s main sponsor, Cara Pharmacy, along with all the other local sponsors, was thanked for their support, both in financial terms and in their commitment to the club, and for their encouragement throughout the past year.

The election of officers for the new term was concluded in a timely manner and the new executive, with some new faces taking up positions, addressed the few motions that were presented. New chairperson, Paddy Donoghue, thanked the outgoing executive for their unselfish and tireless work, thanked all for turning up and wished everyone in the club a successful season ahead.
