Tir Chonaill Youngsters Excel at Ulster Children’s Games

Our youngsters had a rewarding and enjoyable day at the new Aura Centre, Letterkenny, on Sunday when the Ulster Children’s Games were held in ideal sunny conditions.


This magnificent new facility hosted over five hundred 9 to 13 year olds from across the province in a variety of events from sprints, hurdles, mddle distance, throws-ball throw, shot putt, javelin  high and long jump and relays.



Under 13

In the Under 13 age group three Tir Chonaill athletes qualified via heats for the 60m Hurdles final. Kate McGowan was impressive in winning from Laura McPhillips, Glaslough with club mate Ruth Gillespie in the bronze medal winning position. Ciara Duggan had a little difficulty with her approach to the first hurdle finished a very creditable 7th. Sarah Timoney and Katie McCafferty ran well in the heats but did not progress to the final.


In the 80m sprint four club athletes qualified for a most competitive final. Rhianna Campbell, Ballymena and Antrim, won in a time of 11.2 secs with Tir Chonaill quartet  Kate McGowan 3rd , 12.1secs, Eva McMullin 5th 12.8secs, Sarah Timoney 6th 12.8secs and Ruth Gillespie 7th 12.8secs. Katie McCafferty 12.7sec and Ciara Doogan, 13.4secs ran very well in the heats.


Other very good performances in this age group came from Eva McMullin, 2mins 3.9secs- 600m, Katie Mc Cafferty 2mins 8.4secs-600m, Kate McGowan, 3.66m Long Jump, Daire O’Reilly 2mins 6.2secs -600m, Brendan Oates, 6.28m -Shot Putt, Ciaran Bennett, 5.54m -Shot Putt and David Timoney 4.34m -Shot Putt.



Under 12

Megan Magee led the under 12 charge with a good victory in the Shot Putt -5.62m. Grace Nolan filled 3rd spot -4.79m.Other notable club performances were recorded by Grace Nolan, 60m-9.6secs -one place outside final qualification. Also in the 60m Ava Duncan, 9.8secs, Chloe Masterson, 10.7secs, Catherine Early, 10.7secs and Tess O’Kennedy 10.8secs competed very well. In the 600m/Long Jump Ava Duncan -2mins 8secs/3.13m and Ruby Hurst, 600m/Long Jump,2mis 25.2secs/3.17m also came away satisfied.



Team Events

The under 9/10/11 age groups were ran as team events i.e. two competitors per team/club with added times/distances deciding the placings.


In the under 11 age group Ronan McMullin recorded 2mins 9.6secs -600m and 9.9secs for 60m while Thomas McGowan Long Jumped 3.10m. Rebecca Duffy threw the sliothar 15.72m while Eva Diver, Katie Gillespie, and Laura McBrearty finished 6th in the Long Jump and 5th in 60m team events.


In the Under 10 age group, Cian Hegarty threw the Sliothar/Ball 29.10m for outright individual victory and combined with Edward Britton, 17.58m for overall team victory. Matthew Duffy, finished an excellent 5th in the 500m -time 1min 45.5secs, and paired with Cian Hegarty for a 5th team finish in the 60m sprint. Orla Coughlin, was 2nd overall fastest in the 60m -9.8secs and teamed up with Mary Flora Scott, 10.2secs for a 2nd team finish. Aoife Breslin the third member of the group recorded 11.2secs for 60m. Mary Flora Scott ran a determined 500m to win in a time of 1min 45secs and teamed up with Emma Rooney, 1min 58secs for a 2nd team finish. Orla Coughlin and Aoife Breslin were paired in the Long Jump and finished 5th with a combined distance of 5.35metres.
