Three Counties Lake Run

Saturday Morning, 12 Sept 2009

With the Dublin City and AAI National Marathon Championships a mere six weeks away it was time for the by now famous lake run. The lake, Lough Melvin, straddles three counties, Donegal, Leitrim and Fermanagh, and is one of the most scenic running routes you could find anywhere, and has become a regular long route for our marathon and ironmen athletes.

At 8.00am on Saturday morning six athletes, Sean Cassidy, Vinny Duffy, Caroline Spratt, Eileen Ward, Bernie McNeely and Ann Donoghue set off from the Moy Road with backup from the road crew, led by Tony Cummins with Olivia Murphy and Paddy Donoghue. Paddy later joined the athletes on the road for the last 13 miles.

After a cool start and with the warm sun lifting the mist, the runners were treated to some fabulous views, from the mountains on their right to the still beauty of the lake on their left, making the run one of the more pleasurable ones on this route in some time. With Tony, Olivia and Paddy in close attendance, the run was a huge success, along the south shore into Garrison and back along the north shore, with an added 3k at the end making the distance a truly great 22.1 miles.

As is the norm after such runs, the roadside breakfast was the expected treat. Really well done to Sean, Vinny, Caroline, Eileen, Ann and Bernie, you have nothing to fear in Dublin. A big thank you to Tony and Olivia who gave up their morning to provide road crew assistance, your encouragement and support were greatly appreciated. To Paul Ward who joined in the road support for the final 10k, thank you also.
