Sligo 8k

Saturday Evening,15 May 2010

A group of club athletes travelled to Rosses Point in Sligo on Saturday Evening last to take part in the inaugural Sligo AC 8k. Replacing the old women’s only 8k that took place in and around the Sligo IT, this new course, an out and back, is a flat and fast course, was well marshalled with good traffic control.  Registration, changing, showers and a wonderful spread of food afterwards all at the Sligo yacht clubs great facility in Rosses point, were very welcome on what turned out to be a cold and windy evening.

First across the line was the evergreen Marie Rooney, who took first in her category with an excellent 33.41 on the clock.

Paddy Donoghue chased Marie all the way to the line, taking third in his category with an improved 33.42 on the clock.  Philomena Gallagher, with a good run and showing signs of returning to form again placed second in her category with a good 34.23.  For the remainder of the group it was personnel bests all the way to the line.  Gerard McCafferty in an excellent 36.30, Caroline Spratt with a super 37.42, Ann Donoghue with an equally super 39.15 and Bernie McNeely who knocked over four minutes from her previous best with 39.47, were all delighted with their performances. Well done all.
