03 Oct 2010 - Donegal Master Cross Country Championships Finn Valley Centre

The cross country season got off to a great start on a glorious afternoon at the familiar surroundings of the Finn Valley centre on Sunday last with the Donegal women’s and men’s championships. Tír Chonaill Athletic Club had strong teams in both events and came away with a set of gold and silver medals.

First off were the women and with some excellent and strong running from Philomena Gallagher, showing a return to form, to take a super second place behind the superb front running winner Noleen Porter from Finn Valley.  Philomena lead the club to great set of gold medals. Close on Philomena’s heels was the ever reliable Marie Rooney for third overall and with great support from Brenda Morris in sixth and Sharon McGowan in seventh, securing gold.

The men’s race saw a very strong Finn Valley squad take the gold medals with Letterkenny AC’s Pauric McKinney taking the individual gold.  The men from Tír Chonaill battled superbly to take the silver medals some 11 points behind the Valley men. Leading the club to silver was Paul Ward, who along with club mate Leo Murray, had a ding dong duel with Finn Valley’s rejuvenated Mark Connolly and City of Derry’s Declan McCarthy.  With 500m to the line, Paul and Leo, running shoulder to shoulder, surged and with a great effort took 4th and 5th respectively.  Martin O’Halloran, in the middle of some heavy marathon millage, ran strongly to take 10th place with Richard McCarthy gaining some valuable places on the final lap for a 12th place finish, to secure the silver medals.

It was a welcome return to competition for many of the club’s young athletes as the first cross country championships of the season got under way. The club had a good selection of athletes compete and with some great performances both individually and team wise. Rhona McEniff, Bundoran, was the sole athlete in the girls U10 race producing a gutsy run. In the U12 races we had Ronan McMullin, Ballyshannon. give a great solo run finishing in the top 20, followed by Megan McEniff, Bundoran, and Áine Gallagher, Laghey. in the girls U12 race.

The U14 girls, led by Ballyshannon’s Eva McMullin in a superb 8th place, (Eva had an excellent run at the schools cross country at the same venue earlier in the week) claimed a super set of silver medals with some great running. Led by Eva and with some excellent team running, Jessica Quinn, Ciara Crawford, both from Frosses, Ruby Hurst, Ballyshannon, and Laura Sweeney, Ardara, bunched superbly to guarantee the team a podium finish.

The undoubted team performance of the afternoon came from the club’s U-16 boys. From the gun Mark McGuinness, Dunkineely, and Karl Griffin, Donegal Town tucked in behind the early first lap leader, with Sean Kerrs, Frosses a few places back and comfortable, being followed by Joe Morris,Tullahan, Kenny McDaid, Inver, and James Morris, Tullahan.  Heading out on the second lap Mark moved to the front with Karl on his inside shoulder and Sean cruising... Entering the final 800m Karl kicked and easing into the lead he stormed across the line, a superb first, with Mark powering his way down the home straight for an excellent silver. Sean, with perhaps his best race to date over the country finished strongly and followed by  Kenny, Joe and James, bunching well to ensure the team gold.
