Tír Chonaill Athletes shine in Magherafelt

Five national medals, numerous top six finishes and PB performances were recorded by Tír Chonaill Athletes when Part 1 of the 'Irish Indoor Championships' were held in the spacious Meadowbank Arena in Magherafelt last weekend.

Thomas McGowan, on Saturday morning, threw a new National Record with a best of 12.39m in the U13 Shot Putt. Twenty four hours later older sister Kate was equally impressive in winning the U15 60m Hurdles in an excellent time of 9.41secs - Kate on Saturday also finished 4th in the long jump with a best leap of 4.86m - 2cm short of a bronze position.

Kelly McGrory, on both days fought her way through heats to 60m and 60m Hurdles finals. Electronic timing was called upon both to decide the medal winners. In the former final .02secs separated Kelly - 8.03secs from winner Bronwyn Keogh, Fingallians. 8.01secs.In the later final on Sunday it was even closer. Following the most competitive sprint race of the day the result read Dwyer , Carlow, 9.29secs McGrory Tír Chonaill. 9.30secs with Emma Brady, Tír Chonaill in bronze 9.36secs.

Mark McGuinness, 4th U17 1500m 4mins 30.51secs and Mark Hegarty, 4th U15 Shot Putt 11.49m; Ciaran Doogan 6th U15 High Jump, 1.35m; Denise Breslin 10th U13 Shot Putt 8.97m; Orla Coughlan, 12th U12 Long Jump 3.36m and Eilish McGovern 13th Shot Putt U12 all can be very happy with their performances. Congratulations to all, thanks to the coaches for preparation and parents who traveled to support.

Part 2 of the' Irish Indoor Championships' takes place in Nenagh on the first weekend of April when three club relay teams and five individuals, all who qualified at Ulster c/ships, will pitch their talents against the best in Ireland.
