19 Dec 2012 - Declan Reed romps home at NW Cross Country in Gransha

Declan Reed of promoting club City of Derry Spartans and North Belfast Harriers and Gladys Ganiel were convincing winners of the 6K Open race at a very well supported North West cross country championships last Saturday in a surprisingly sunny and mild Gransha grounds.

A determined Reed saw off strong challenges from perennial Masters rival Annadale's David Morwood and the promising local Scott Rankin of Foyle Valley. A typical fluent, flowing run got him home eight seconds clear of the fast finishing Morwood with Rankin a further seventeen seconds in arrears at the end of the three lap contest. With close up support from fourth placer Noel Logan and a stronger lower order the Spartans claimed the six to score team prize ahead of North Belfast and Foyle Valley. Valley packed brilliantly with four finishers in the top twelve but lacked the back up to trouble the lead duo beyond that.

Valley's Keith Shields looked good in fifth and took the M35 prize, North's Connor Magill, the 2011 Ulster Novice winner was sixth, his club mate Alan O'Hara seventh, and only two seconds separated the next three, top U20 Willowfield's Ryan Holt, Andrew Annett of Mourne Runners and the gutsy Pius McIntyre of Foyle Valley. The winning Spartans squad was completed by M40 winner Colin Roberts, Paddy Mhor Doherty, Paul McCafferty and Kieran Hurley.

In the women's race Gladys Ganiel confirmed her class with an emphatic win, finishing a minute clear of Letterkenny's Fionnuala Diver with third placer Patricia O'Hagan of St Peters AC almost half a minute further back. The next three were in close pursuit and finished in a four second period, North Down's Jessica Craig just edging out Omagh Harrier Michelle Sturm and the leading local Catherine Whoriskey of City of Derry.

Sturm led an impressive Omagh squad to a surprise team success, their four scorers pipping the Spartans by just three points with the previous all conquering North Down back in third. Whoriskey was supported by the top F50 Anne Paul in seventh, Jackie McGinley and Hannah Shields.

There was a record 225 recorded finishers in the Open race with 25 different clubs represented on the start line, the points at stake in both the ANI Winter League and the NI Masters League plus the established reputation of the event, clearly contributing to attracting the big entry who thoroughly entertained the massed ranks of spectators on a rare sunny winters day.

The remaining female age group prizes went to Gillian Wasson of Springwell F35; Omagh's Julie Butler F40; Helen Stockdale of Clones AC F 45;Roisin Lynch City of Derry F60; Brigid Quinn Ballymena Runners F65 and Sara Moore Omagh Harriers U20. The remaining male category winners were Francis Marsh North Down M45; Tommy Hughes NBH M50; Paddy Ward Letterkenny M55; Jim Newberry NBH M60; Christy McMonagle City of Derry M65 and Jim Platt Springwell M70.

There were two good local wins in the U17 4K with the Spartans Shane McGowan and Aoife Laverty taking the honours.

14 Nov 2012 - New Members

Its most encouraging to see the ever increasing membership into our club. The end of October statistics from Athletics Ireland finds Tír Chonaill as the club with the largest membership in Donegal. The juvenile, Senior and fit4life/meet and train programme running at Donegal Town/Ballyshannon and Bundoran are receiving very favourable reports.

Thanks are due to the numerous club coaches that plan, organise and coach weekly at these venues. For the record the following official membership list was published earlier this week via Athletic Ireland Tír Chonaill 287, Finn Valley 278, Cranford 112, Letterkenny 270, Innishowen 243, Lifford 215, Rosses 172, Sl. 11 Nov 2012 - Northern Ireland & Ulster Novice Cross Country Championships, Fintra, Killybegs

Fintra’s scenic cross country course near Killybegs was the competition venue on Sunday last for over 600 athletes from every corner of Ulster when the provincial 'Novice and Uneven Age Group Cross Country Championships were held in ideal conditions.

Tír Chonaill had two teams face the starter, Novice men and Under 17 Boys and both can be proud of their achievements on the day.

Daniel Gallagher, recently returned to training with the club had an outstanding run to finish 6th in the Boys U17 race. The Dunkineely man ran conservatively for the opening half of the race before making huge inroads over the final 2k. Diarmiud Mac a Bhaird, from Bundoran, in only his 2nd ever competitive cross country race was also a revelation and like Daniel came through the field as the 2nd half unwound to finish in 15th place. The two Mark’s ran solid races – Mark Boyle from Frosses finished 22nd while Mark Hegarty from near Killybegs was in 27th finishing position. Ardara man Patrick Cannon was the final club scorer with a solid performance and 38th place finish. Overall the team was 4th on 70pts with four of the five members under 17 again next year.

The Novice men’s team put in a battling performance to finish 7th overall team in one of the biggest starting fields in recent years - 72 finished the race. The scoring positions only tells part of the story. John Coyle was with the leading group for most of the race before a severe cramp forced him to slow down to walking pace with less than 2k remaining. However drop out are not words associated with this sport and John dug in again and finished 37th. Ciaran Clancy led the team home in 29th position closely followed by Noel Thomas in 31st. Ollie Thomas the clubs 4th scorer was very enthusiastic over the opening 2k and may have paid the penalty for his early heroics when finishing in 42nd place. Team captain and coach Richard McCarthy was the final club scorer in 54th place.

Karl Griffin travelled to the Catalonian Capital Barcelona last week for the World Junior U20 Track and Field Championships. This biannual event attracted the cream of the Worlds Young Athletes from 140 countries to the week long festival of athletics competition. The standards achieved by many of the medal winners during the period equalled if not surpassed the upcoming bests in the upcoming London Olympics.

The 17 year old Tir Chonaill man was drawn in the final heat seven. Karl ran an excellent race and time of 1min 51.98secs but did not progress to the semi finals. Karl one of the youngest competitors at the championships, ended up following the first round times in 39th position from a start field 61 competitors - a top 40 position in the world and giving most of the opposition over two years of maturity and experience. Well done Karl - you should be proud of your achievement and no doubt will put the experience gained to best use in the years ahead.

27 June 2012 - Carndonagh 5k Race14

In a very wet Carndonagh, Donegal and Wednesday night's Furey Insurances 5K was won by Damien McGinty who belied his M50 status to see off all comers with a 17m 12s winning time. Not a night for quick times as the rain started minutes before the gun went and the 100 plus participants sloshed their way round the testing Carn course.

The 51 year old let younger rivals Tim Shields and Mark Long make the early pace before coming through around half way to finish eight seconds clear of Long with another golden oldie M40 James Crampsey clocking 17m 25s for third. Benny McDaid ran 17m 32s for fourth as Shields faded to fifth on 17m 38s. Jim Harkin kept the Inishowen flag flying with a 17m 48s effort as he completed the top six finishers. The local road race gurus reckon that McGinty is the oldest man to win a Furey Series race and this was confirmed by Declan McCarthy of the race sponsors Atlanfish, himself a series race winner a few years ago in his forties.

Catherine Lilburn claimed another series women's victory with an impressive 19m 17s effort, ahead of Martina McMullan on 19m 40s, with Miriam Bridge and Sarah Mahon producing an exciting duel as Bridge got home third by just three seconds, 19m 49s to 19m 52s. These may well have been PBS', excellent results on the wet and tough Carn course.

Jackie McGinley ran 20m 10s to claim the F40 award, Hannah McGowan took another U20 prize with 20m 42s and Bridgeen Byrne on 21m 16s was the top F45. Sinead McDermott was the leading F35 0n 23m 02s, picking up her first age group prize just as she moves into a new category!

Tim Shield got some compensation by lifting the M35 award, Ronan Whoriskey and Paul McNamee were the top M40 and M45, top M50 was Michael Gallagher, Sammy McAnaney ran 18m 03s for the M55 category prize and Moville man Seamus McElhinney claimed another M60 prize. Tri athlete Emmett Mullan won the U20 age group and Karol Doherty pushed hard in the rain to win the wheelchair category. Despite the miserable wet conditions there were 103 recorded finishers as the series continues to attract good numbers.

The Irish Junior U20 Championships in Tullamore on Sunday had a number of successes for Tír Chonaill athletes. He will compete in the 800m on the hill top Barcelona Olympic Stadium in the 800m heats on Friday morning 13th July. We wish him and the Irish Team - which includes five Donegal athletes - all the best against athletes from over one hundred countries in an event that will produce numerous future Olympic medal winners.

The demanding Leaving Certificate - just concluded - did not deter Christopher Doherty from bouncing back to secure a silver medal winning performance in the technical and psychologically demanding Pole Vault discipline. His best of 3.50metres will give the Gortloskey lad added confidence as the season progresses. Louise Harvey, getting back to fitness finished 5th in the 400m hurdles in a time of 65+ seconds while Barry Quigg from neighbouring Sliabh Liag AC cleared 1.90m for 4th in the High Jump and 12.78m for a bronze medal in the Triple Jump. By Brendan O'Donnell

Juvenile Competition Secretary

Our Championships have been going from strength to strength in recent years with top quality competition on show and the cream of Donegal athletics and farther afield all involved and taking part. The County Board has expanded its programme further this year to include a full range of sprint hurdles events as well as the discus and hammer being added for all age groups. Yet again, we warmly welcome the participation of clubs from outside the county, which gives an added edge to and enhances the quality of our Championships.

Let's keep building on the success of our County Championships and make this Olympic year even bigger and better for Donegal athletics.

The successful running of any Championships is only as good as the help we get from our clubs. We would be grateful if clubs would make at least two officials available to officiate and/or help out on each day.

01 Feb 2012 - Into 2012

January is viewed by many sports people as a quiet period. Tír Chonaill AC members seemed to have forgotten this sentence as the opening four weeks of the new year were very busy.

Thirty eight club members departed on New Years Eve for an eight day warm weather training stint in Monte Gordo, Western Algarve. The experience of training in an International facility, of mingling with International athletes was inspiring. Catriona McKiernan's visit to the group - where she trained and was involved in a most informative Q&A session was one of the many highlights.

Mary McLoone had hardly returned home when she was straight into competition. She had early Indoor long jump victories in Belfast, Nenagh and last weekend in London. Mary is now a full time athlete and we wish her every success in Olympic year 2012.
