22 Dec 2013 - Tir Chonaill AC Jingle Bells 5k

Daniel Gallagher runs 17mis.08secs to win the Tir Chonaill AC Jingle Bells 5k today at Donegal Town. In 'far from ideal conditions' the Dunkineely youngster was an impressive winner from Michael Murphy Tullamore Harriers with 17 years old Mark Boyle from Tir Chonaill in 3rd.

Philomena Gallagher, Tir Chonaill AC, Brigid Mohan, Innishowen and Sharon Thomas Tir Chonaill were the first three women home.

All 70 participants plus the organising committee who braved the rain and stormy conditions were all winners.

Following the event club Chairman Paul OGara thanked all for supporting the event -'when it would have been much easier to stay in bed' and presented €500 to Frank O’Donnell, SVP Donegal Town.

23 Oct 2013 - Tír Chonaill Athletics Club Group compete in Dublin City Marathon

Over twenty athletes from the club and region will compete in next Monday’s Dublin City Marathon. All have prepared with a purpose, under the coaching guidance of Paddy Donoghue, all have specific completion goals/times, many are completing the 26miles plus distance for various charities. All are to be congratulated and wished every success on attempting to complete the challenge of the marathon.

23 Oct 2013 - Club Training

The numbers attending club group training sessions at the moment is most encouraging. Many members have commented on the great 'buzz and fun' experienced at these sessions and of the safe and user friendly facilities of the 'floodlit track' and well equipped sportshall/gymnasium.

On Tues evening last with a 7:00pm start, Kevin Mc Glynn's fit4life Group in Donegal Town had an attendance of over 30 complete a session that included a dynamic warm up, core and circuit training plus a 30 minute aerobic run. Earlier on Tuesday Evening at 4:00-5:30pm the AVS School Session led by Michelle Harvey had an equally impressive attendance.

On Thursday Evening from 5:45 -7:00pm the Primary Schools weekly 'Little Athletics ' programme of agility, balance, co-ordination, running, jumping and throwing games and led by Paul O'Gara, David Doherty, Ann McGowan and Jackie Harvey had over 90 in attendance.

Also on Thursday Evening the Senior Training Group i.e. Secondary School Age Group and upwards had over 30 in attendance under the lead of Richard McCarthy and Eamon Harvey. They were joined on the final 40mins of the session by over 20 of Kevin McGlynn's fit4life Group for an excellent S&C circuit session which included stations of resistance running, using pullies, medicine ball work, 4 core/plank exercises, skipping, agility, bench dips, step ups, squats and running.

To find approx. 60 adults involved and working hard in a well organised and structured session was a tribute to the clubs coaching structure.

On Saturday morning Paddy Donoghues Dublin City Marathon Group trained at 8:30am from the Church Car Park in Bundoran while Kevin Mc Glynn’s Donegal Town fit4life Group trained at 8:00am. On Sunday morning our Senior Athletes attended the weekly Track and Field session at club HQ in Donegal Town.as always, new members are welcome to join all groups.

Four club members travelled to Manorhamilton on Saturday last for a well attended eight hours Athletics Leader coaching course. Well done. All will now get involved and assist with coaching on the clubs Little Athletics Programme on Thursday Night in Donegal Town 5:45 -7:00pm.

The annual and very popular and professionally run Cara 10 Mile Road Race will be launched on Tuesday 12th November in Bundoran Library at 7:30pm. Tir Chonaill AC has a large supportive and beneficial role and encourages as many members as possible to attend.

Yet another big turnout from clubs across the county as well as from Omagh, Enniskillen and Ballymena when the 2nd Round of the Donegal Cross Country Championships was held in summer like conditions in Castlefinn on Sunday last. Thanks to the Finn Valley Athletics Club for its successful hosting.

The Donegal Cross Country season got off to a spectacular start last Sunday with the Even and Novice Championships, hosted and superbly organised by the local Rosses Club, at the Mullaghderg Banks in Annagry. Over 500 athletes from all over Donegal and from visiting clubs Omagh Harriers, Enniskillen and Mid Ulster took part in glorious sunshine on a links course. more

 

 

 

06 Oct 2013 - Dublin City Marathon Group

The final preparations for the upcoming Dublin City Marathon – now three weeks away – are being put in place by club athletes. Paddy Donoghue leads a group of over twenty in Dublin and on Saturday morning last they successfully completed their final long run of 22 +miles. Following the run Paddy thanked – ‘ all the support runners, support vehicles and Tony Cummins on his trusted bike, (who covered much more that the marathon distance for us today). You were all brilliant out on the road...and for the absolutely delicious breakfast picnic after and the dip in the lake’ The club wishes all ever success in Dublin.

Next Sunday the club will have a number of teams and individuals compete in Round 2 of the Donegal CC in Castlefinn. Travel arrangements following training on Thursday night. A number of club coaches will attend an Athletics Leader Coaching course on Saturday week in Manorhamilton – hosts Nth Leitrim AC. Training for the Fun in Athletics Juvenile group, Senior, fit4life, meet and train groups continue on Tuesday, Thursday evenings and on Saturday and Sunday mornings at the usual times and locations.

 

 

 

04 Oct 2013 - Karl Griffin receives Elite Athletics Scholarship

As club members and activities move from a very successful summer season and plan and prepare for another year it’s a time to highlight recent achievements and wish all athletes of all ages, coaches and administrators a successful year ahead.

Karl Griffin has made remarkable progress since joining Tir Chonaill A.C. five years ago. From winning the Celtic U16 800m International in Wales in 2009, improving his 800m time from 2mins+  to 1min 49.63secs as a 17 year old in 2012 – a National U18 Youth Record. Karl’s list of achievements also includes numerous Irish club and school titles /records and International experience at International Schools/Glasgow -2nd 800m; European Youth Olympics in Turkey – where he won bronze in the 800m/2011 and World Junior/Barcelona 2012 and European Junior/Reiti 2013.

The recent exciting news that Karl was awarded an elite athletics scholarship to UCD recognises his progress to date and is another step towards realising his athletics potential. At U.C.D. he joins a group of the country’s top young athletes, including Letterkeny’s Mark English and Ruairi Finnegan and Limerick’s talented Sarah Lavin who many pundits reckon is set to fill the shoes of Derval O’Rourke. Karl represented and benefited from the Abbey Vocational Schools academic and athletics programmes, scored a remarkable 565 points in his Leaving Cert and will study Science in UCD.

Club athletes continue to compete on the road circuit with great success. At the recent Donegal 5k Road Championships the women’s team of Philomena Gallagher, Linda Ward, Vera Haughey, Sharon McGowan and Jackie Harvey  finished 2nd masters team and to Richard McCarthy, Ollie Thomas, John Cannon, Gregory O’loughlan and Christopher O’Loughlan who were impressive in the Men’s masters and Junior races.

Well done also to  Paul Ward, Gerry McManus, Julie McMullan, Brian McMullan and Loretta Cullen on fine performances in last Sundays Sligo 10miles Coast to Coast run and to Donal Haughey, on home soil, and Jackie Harvey category winners at the Ardara 5k , Congratulations and well done to all.

04 Oct 2013 - Warm Weather Training Camp 2013/14

Richard McCarthy, warm weather training camp organizer, is now accepting names and [expressions of interest] for the clubs annual warm weather training camp. The location again is Monte Gordo in the Eastern Algarve, dates 28th Dec to 5th Jan. The location provides 10k of forest trails, 2k of very good grass trails,8k of beach plus indoor/outdoor track and field facilities, S&C facilities plus sports science support services. Last year 32 club members availed of the opportunity and came from the clubs junior/senior and fit4life  groups. Enquiries to Richard 087 375599.

It’s the final training preparation phase for the Dublin City Marathon. Numerous club members have been preparing for this event over the past 6/12 months. Paddy Donoghue, reports that he will lead a group of 13 from the Ballyshannon/Bundoran area, all have realistic ambitions of achieving PB times. The Donegal Town club fit4life group also has a number of representatives. We wish all success.

 

 

 

04 Oct 2013 - Club Training Times

Juvenile training for the primary school age group is up and running  in Donegal Town on Thursday evenings 5.45-7pm. Over 80 young athletes attended last week. Junior and Senior group training also takes place on Thursday Evenings from 6:30 - 8:00pm  and Sunday morning at 10:30 .Many from this group, approx. 30 in number also train of Tuesday evening 4:00 - 6:00pm as part of Michelle Harvey’s AVS athletics programme.

The Donegal Town fit4life/meet and train group had over 40 members train on Tuesday night of this under the guidance of Kevin McGlynn and Eamon Harvey. The 90 mins session incorporates a dynamic warm up, 30mins local S&C/ circuit training plus 40mins aerobic run on the track under the lights. This group also trains on Thursday evening -- 30mins run and then join the clubs junior /senior athletes for a 30mins inclusive S&C/circuit session. It’s an 8:00am start for this group on Saturday mornings.

The clubs women’s team qualified for the Premier League Final after a lapse of a few years and although a little under strength due to injury withdrawals, performed out of their skins in Tullamore on Sunday last. 23 Aug 2013 - Caolan O'Callaghan and Lucy McGlynn at National Community Games Finals

Congratulations to Caolan O'Callaghan 2nd in the U16 High Jump and to Lucy McGlynn 3rd U10 Hurdles at the National Community Games Finals in Athlone on Sunday last. Coalan from Donegal Town has trained consistently all summer and his 1.74m PB was equal to the winners height - the medals were decided on count back. Lucy from Ballyshannon was introduced to hurdles at the clubs summer camp in early July.

All of the clubs track and field athletes will now take a deserved break from competition/training before starting back into their winter schedule in late September. The clubs distance groups, many with the Dublin City Marathon as their goal will continue with their detailed schedules. The clubs Donegal Town fit4life group will resume training on the second Tues of Sept.

On Saturday Kelly McGrory was a member of the Irish U18 Celtic Team that competed in Colynn Bay, North Wales. The Laghey lass gave Ireland maximum points when winning the 400m Hurdles in a new record and impressive time of 64.14secs pushing Rosie Wilson, Scotland and Rhiana Williams into the minor places.Well done Kelly.

09 Aug 2013 - Gathering 5k in Donegal Town

On Monday the club hosted the Gathering 5k in Donegal Town. The race was won impressively by Sane Hayes from Sligo. Thanks to all the athletes that supported, to the Gardaí, the numerous marshalls, timekeepers, results and hospitality groups a sincere thanks, a most enjoyable night. Well done all.

16 July 2013 - Tir Chonaill Women qualify for National League Final

Glorious sunshine, exciting competition, and a large crowd greeted the 2nd Round of the National League at Sligo IT on Sunday last. Tir Chonaill women with a number of exciting individual performances finished on 113 pts, three points behind winners Clonliffe and qualified for the August 18th prestigious Premeir League Final in Tullamore where they will be joined by Leevale, DSD, Raheny, Galway County, Ferrybank, Kildare County and Clonliffe Harriers.

Mary McLoone, had a double victory in the Long and Triple Jumps and anchored the 4x100m team of Kate McGowan, Kelly McGrory and Emma Brady to runners up place with a good time of 49.43secs. Kate McGowan, one of the young members of the squad, filled 2nd place in the 100m Hurdles, 2nd 100m and 5th in the Shot Putt. Kelly McGrory, running in the difficult outside lane in the 400m Hurdles was piped for first place by six hundredths of a second and filled 3rd position in the High Jump and 200m. Anne Marie McGlynn, a very welcome guest for the club, had two impressive victories in the 800m and 1500m and anchored the 4x400m team of Louise Harvey, Emma Brady, Kate McGowan to 4th place. Katie Hoad gained maximum points in the Pole Vault and a sixth position in the Javelin while Karen Crossan, guesting, ran an excellent 3000m for runners up points. Louise Harvey, 400m, 6th and Brenda Morris, 6th Discus finalised the points total.

The clubs very youthful men’s team scored an impressive 121pts and when 92pts from Day 1 in Santry were added hey missed out on Div 1 Final qualification by the narrowest of margins. Tir Chonaill victories came via an excellent double from Barry Quigg, High Jump/1.85m and 110 Hurdles, Christopher Doherty, Pole Vault, Paul O’Gara, 56lb for distance/2nd Hammer and Conal Mahon, Triple Jump.

Aidan Gillespie, guesting for the club, added runners up points in both the Long Jump and Shot Putt while Richard McCarthy, better known for his exploits on the road, added valuable points for 2nd in the 3000m walk and 3rd in the 800m.

Sean Lorenyinko, a former Irish Schools and Junior Javelin Champion made a return to club colours and finished 3rd in both the Discus and Javelin. Jack Behan returned two thirds in the 100m/200m while Christopher O’Loughlan, 3rd/400mH and guest, Mark Mc Brearty, 3rd, 400m. Finally the 4x100m team of Jack Behan, Aidan Gillespie, Barry Quigg and Conal Mahon finished a good third.

The club would like to congratulate both teams on their performances, the women’s team of final qualification and thank the following quests who wore the clubs colours on the day, Aidan Gillespie, Rosses AC, Karen Crossan, Innishowen AC, Mark McBrearty and Ann Marie McGlynn both Lifford AC. Thanks to club Captains/Managers David Doherty and Jackie Harvey for all their work prior to and on the days of competition.

 

 

 

16 July 2013 - Karl Griffin goes to European Junior U20 Championships in Reiti Italy

Karl Griffin departed on Monday morning to compete in the European Junior U20 Championships in Reiti Italy. Karl will contest the heats of the 800m on Friday Morning at 11:00am. Karl will be joined by Lettterkenny AC’s Ruairi Finnigan,1500m at these championships.

 

 

 

16 July 2013 - Kelly Mc Grory and Kate McGowan on Irish Schools U17 Team

Kelly Mc Grory and Kate McGowan will join the Irish Schools U17 Team on Friday evening and compete on Saturday in Santry, Dublin, versus England, Wales and Scotland. Kelly competes in the 300m Hurdles and 4x100m relay while Kate goes in the shorter 80m Hurldes, Long Jump and 4x100m relay. We wish them and Karl good luck and relay the support of the local community, your club, Tir Chonaill AC, and your school, Abbey Vocational School, who are so proud of your International recognition and achievements.

 

 

 

09 July 2013 - Julie McMullan wins North Leitrim Glens Half Marathon

Julie McMullan, from Creevy, finishing in 12th overall position and was the first female finisher at the well organised North Leitrim Glens Half Marathon on Saturday. Congrats and well done to Julie who recorded an excellent time of 1hr 42mins34 secs for the 13 miles plus distance. Also to hubbie Brian 1hr 51mins 11secs and to Claire Flood, 1hr 53mins 6secs.

 

 

 

09 July 2013 - Erne Gaels 10k at Beeleek

The Erne Gaels 10k at Beeleek also had numerous Tir Chonaill AC athletes involved. The race was won by Conan McCaughney from Enniskillen. Conan, a regular and welcome visitor to Tir Chonaill races posted a good time of 34mins 20secs. Well done to all who participated and to the following club members, many of whom won category prizes and posted PB times for the distance.

09 July 2013 - International Duty for Karl Griffin, Kelly McGrory and Kate McGowan

Congratulations and best wishes to Karl Griffin, Kelly McGrory and Kate McGowan who have gained selections on Irish teams to compete in major championships during the next few weeks. Karl Griffin, via a number of very good performances achieved the required time/standard to compete in the European Junior U20 Championships. The Ballydevitt man will contest the 800m where heats, semi-finals and final will be the order of the day as he toes the line in Reiti, Italy, against the top junior in Europe on 18th -21st July.

Kelly and Kate have also been hitting the headlines nationally during the past few months and have gained selection onto the Irish Schools Under 17 versus England, Wales and Scotland. The club and the community support all three on this magnificent achievement.

 

 

 

09 July 2013 - Tir Chonaill AC Summer Camp

On Friday evening last the clubs annual five days summer camp concluded at the clubs HQ a the Abbey Vocational School. One hundred and ten young athletes plus twenty leaders/coaches enjoyed a week of varying activities and challenges, including coaching the fundamentals of major games, sean nos dancing, art, gymnastics, sporthall athletics, athletics including Long Jump, High Jump, Pole Vault, Hurdles, Turbo Javelin, Shot Putt, mile challenge and a sports/jamboree to finish.

Thanks to all the young athletes for attending, no doubt many will join the athletics club in September and to the coaches/leaders that ensured the programme was well planned and delivered in a safe and fun filled environment.

03 July 2013 - Hospice Run/Walk in Mullaghmore

The Hospice 3 mls Run/Walk in Mullaghmore this year is on Sunday August 11th at 5:00pm. It is an annual fund raiser for The North West Hospice since 1997 and the race/walk as always is one lap of Mullaghmore Head plus 250m to make up the 3 mls. This is an enjoyable event and all are welcome, so come along to this worthy cause.

Congratulations to Karl Griffin, in his first race of the outdoor season, running 1min50.71secs tonight Tuesday, in an International Meeting at the opening of the new Mary Peters Track. This is a qualification time for the European Juniors. Karl's next race is in Manheim in Germany on Saturday next.

Congratulations and well done to Noel Thomas on an outstanding performance in the 52 miles Mourne Way Ultra Marathon. The demanding race, held on the 8th June found Noel finishing 17th out of 67 finishers in a time of 10hours 46secs.

Following on from the success of last year’s fifth Malin Road Races, INISH Pharmacy are delighted to once again sponsor the 5K Road Race and the Malin Mile. This year we are again running a senior and a Juvenile Malin Mile.

In addition this year the First Male and First Female back for the Malin Mile (winners) will earn €100 for their Athletic Club - So The Club wins if their club memer wins. There are individual prizes for all catrgory winners.

Malin 5K at 11:30am - Sunday 28th July 2013 (Walkers not only welcome but encouraged). The 5K Race will follow the same course route as previous years. It will start outside Malin Town on the Culdaff Road. The runners will run out of town towards Ballyboe. They will then turn left and run up towards the Malin - Glengad Road. Once at the road the will again turn left and run back downhill towards the town. The finish line is at the telephone box.

There is a €10 race entry for all participants. All the entry fee money goes directly to the RNLI. INISH Pharmacy contributes the Prize money and we are delighted to do so and support these events and the RNLI. Inishowen Athletics supplies the Junior Mile Race medals.

On Sunday last club athletes experienced sunshine for the first time this summer when Rd.1 of the National Track and Field Championships was held in Santry Stadium. The men in the Division 1 category and the women in the Premier category recorded a number of fine performances and will look forward to Rd.2, scheduled for Sligo in mid July with possibilities of qualification for top eight placings and a league final position. 23 May 2013 - Danny McDaid Open Meeting

On Saturday evening the Danny McDaid Track was officially opened in Letterkenny with a host of International stars making all events memorable and competitive. Club athletes Mary McLone, Barry Quigg and Sean Lorenynko were invited to be part of the historic gathering and did not disappoint. Mary McLoone was involved in the long jump where she finished 3rd with a best of 5.98m. Only 5 cms separated the top three with winner Kelly Proper from Waterford securing victory with a best of 6.03m on her last attempt.

Barry Quigg, has just finished his 2nd year of study at UCG. He cleared 1.85m for 2nd in the most unfavourable high jumping conditions Sean Lorenynko, a former Irish schools and National Junior Javelin Champion is making a very welcome return to the sport. On many evenings and Sunday mornings, Sean can be found coaching at club sessions in Donegal Town and was happy with a mid 30metres best in the Javelin.

 

 

 

16 May 2013 - Cara Bundoran 10 Presentations

Early this week at a well attended presentation function in Cara Headquarters in Ballyshannon, €15,000 the proceeds from the very successful and well supported Cara Bundoran 10 Challenge 2013 was made to local charities St Vincent De Paul chapters in Bundoran, Ballyshannon and Donegal Town and to the North West Hospice. Tír Chonaill Athletics Club, also benefited and numerous club members had an input in the various stages of organising and running of the event. A special word of thanks to Cara Bundoran 10 committee led by Canice Nicholas and race director Paddy Donoghue for all their work mostly behind the scenes, ensuring that this challenge has developed into one of the top annual races nationally on the road calendar. 16 May 2013 - Its a Busy Time for Club Members

It’s a hectic and busy time for club members, athletes, coaches and administrators. Numerous club athletes successfully contested recent Donegal Track and Field Championships in Letterkenny and Lifford. Schools athletes from the clubs catchments area were successful in Donegal Secondary and Vocational Championships while 28 athletes from Scoil Colmcille, Abbey Vocational School, St Catherine's, Killybegs and Choláiste na Carragie will contest the Ulster schools finals at the Antrim Forum on Friday Evening/Saturday next.

On the road club members were successful at a number of locations including the Belfast Marathon, North West 10k and locally last Friday evening in the Ballyshannon 5k. During the coming month our underage athletes will contest Ulster and Irish Schools Finals while four are short listed and will attempt to qualify for major European c/ships. At Senior levels Men and Women’s teams have been entered in the National Track and Field League. Round 1 takes place on Sunday week in Athlone. On the road scene large groups continue to train at Donegal Town, Ballyshannon and Bundoran and all have goals of competing in local and national events.

On Friday night last it was back home for the Donegal Grand Prix Race 3 in Ballyshannon where a number of local club athletes posted PB’s and secured prizes in various categories in a very fast 5k race. Congratulations and well done to all and thanks to all club officials who planned, organised and ensured the successful running of the event. Next local 5k will take place in Donegal Town on Friday evening the 31st May. This race is also part of the Donegal Grand Prix and a large turnout of local and regionally based athletes will attend. Thanks to all club athletes who recently supported the 100k treadmill challenges organised by Cara Pharmacies at their Sligo and Donegal stores. 10 May 2013 - Ballyshannon 5k Race3

The second of the Donegal Grand Prix Series of Road Races was hosted by Tír Chonaill Athletics Club in Ballyshannon on Friday Night last and drew an excellent entry from across the North West and found Female and Male winners, Natasha Adams, Lifford AC and Keith Shields, Foyle Valley recording notable winning times of 17mins 29secs and 15mins 14 sec's.

Adams a member of the rejuvenated Lifford Club had nearly three minutes to spare at the finish while Shields, fresh from his impressive victory in the North West 10k five days earlier was pushed all the way by Enniskillen's Conan McCaughey, 15mins25secs and 2012 winner James Speight, Finn Valley,15mins 36secs.

Following the event Eamon Harvey, representing the host club, thanked all who competed, club members who organised, stewarded, provided hospitality and produced official results within 15minutes of the finish of the race. He also thanked the Scoil Colmcille for the use of facilities and the Gardai for their support on the night. Paul O'Gara, Chairman of Tír Chonaill AC, presented prizes the following category winners. The  perpetual  PJ Branley Cups  to the winning male and female were presented by members of the Branley Family.

28 Apr 2013 - Paul Ward wins Race 3 in Tir Chonaill AC Spring Series

Local club athletes Paul Ward and Siobhan Gallagher were impressive category winners when the 3rd and final 5k of the Tír Chonaill AC Spring Series was held on Sunday morning in Donegal Town. Paul was followed home by ever improving Declan Gillespie, Sl Liag and St Naul's GAA mentor Brian McCabe. Siobhan had Philomena Gallagher and Linda Ward close on her heels at the finish line.

At the presentation of prizes afterwards Eamon Harvey, on behalf of the organising club, congratulated thanked all the runners/walkers that had supported the series in large numbers, the local organising committee for the smooth running of the event and for providing hospitality. He encouraged all to support the upcoming Donegal Grand Prix Road Race Series and in particular the North West 10k next Sunday and local races in the series at Ballyshannon on Friday 10th April - 7:30 start and Donegal Town on Friday 31st April -7:30 start.

13 Apr 2013 - Paul Ward wins Race 2 in Tir Chonaill AC Spring Series

Paul Ward continued his excellent road running form when he came home in an impressive 17minutes time in Race 2 of the Tir Chonaill AC Spring Series at Donegal Town on Saturday morning. The Ballyshannon, M40, had exactly 60ses to spare on Sliabh Liag newcomer Declan Gillespie with 16 years old Mark Boyle in 3rd in 18:50. Siobhan Gallagher was a popular winner of the women’s section 20:23 from Sharon McGowan, 22:19 and Sharon Meehan 22:26. The club would like to thanks all the participants who took part, the numerous club stewards and the Gardai for excellent organisation plus the social committee headed up by Brenda Morris for the very welcome hospitality afterwards. The final race in the series takes place on Sunday morning the 28th April -10am start on a course that is recognised as accurate in distance, flat, fast and safe. 26 Mar 2013 - Irish Juvenile Indoor Championships Athlone

Eight club athletes qualified for the first Irish Juvenile Indoor Championships held in the magnificent new Indoor Arena in Athlone last weekend. Laghey’s, Kelly McGrory led the club assault with two PB final performances in the 60m on Saturday and 200m on Sunday. The 2012 Athletics Ireland Donegal Athlete of the Year continues to improve with every outing and was most impressive in winning the U18 60m Final in a an excellent time of 7.78secs. In the 200m final Kelly ran another PB of time 25.40secs, being piped for the gold medal in the final 30m.

Clar’s, Kate McGowan, 8.77secs and City of Lisburn’s Megan Marrs, 8.50secs both smashed Derval O’Rourke’s Under 17 - 60m Hurdles record. Kate continues to run faster with each outing and in the 60m final dipped under 8secs for the first time when finished 6th in 7.98secs.

Dunkineely’s Daniel Gallagher, took the direct route in the Boys U17 1500m final. In a 16 man final, Daniel went to the front from the gun and increased his lead to 20metres at 1k. Over the final two laps-400m, the pursuing pack led by Cian McBride, North Sligo gradually closed the gap. Overtaken with 300m to go Daniel dug in and was delighted with his time of 4mins 12.86secs, and a first National medal.

Dunkineely club colleague, Mark McGuiness, followed up with a 7th finish place in the U19 1500m final. Donegal Town’s Emma Brady, with a best of 10.14m in the U18 Triple Jump was just a few cms short of a podium finish.

Ardaghey’s Mark Campbell, with a PB of 10.34m filled 6th place in the U14 Shot Putt while Creevey’s, Eva McMullan, ran 27.34secs/200m U17.

Donegal Town’s newcomer Caolan O’Callaghan, cleared 1.70m for a 7th place finish in the U16 High Jump. Congrats and well done to all and a sincere thanks to the club coaches and parents who travelled to Athlone in support.

14 Mar 2013 - Cara Bundoran 10 Challenge

Saturday lasts superbly organised Cara Bundoran 10 Challenge attracted a massive 1,200 starters and four times that number of supporters to the seaside town.

Local Tír Chonaill training group athletes from Bundoran, Ballyshannon and Ballyshannon turned out in their hundred’s to compete and support –many gaining top three category positions and others competing the distance in PB times and more for the first time over the distance. Tír Chonaill's Paul Ward is having a great season on the road and over the country. With one mile to go he and the trio of Sligo AC’s Richard Gorman, Innishowens Pauric McKinney and Finn Valley newcomer Gerard Gallagher were contesting the lead. The individual placing’s were decided on the double incline behind the Great Northern Hotel when Gorman stretched the pace and came home an impressive winner.

Fiona Stack,from Ballyshannon, was equally impressive in winning the women’s event in a time of 62mins 10secs – excellent in in cold and windy conditions.

The success of the Cara Bundoran 10 can be attributed to the hard working committee led by Race Director Paddy Donoghue and to the following support groups and individuals Cara Pharmacy, Tír Chonaill Athletics Club, All Sports Donegal Town, Ocean FM, Donegal Democrat, Rubex, UDO’s Choice, River Rock, Lean on Me, Bundoran Town Council, Discover Bundoran , Gardai Siochana,Order of Malta, Meehan Travel, Bundoran Tidy Town’s Group, Magh Éne College and the 50 stewards from the community and local clubs.

14 Mar 2013 - Donegal Primary Schools Sports Hall Athletics Finals a Great Success

The county finals of the primary schools sports hall athletics proved to be a very exciting, fun and up tempo occasion with close on 600 children participating in twelve different athletic disciplines in a team format. The Aura Sports Centre, Letterkenny was a hive of activity with schools representing four regions of the county gave their all ...with some outstanding performances in all four categories of 3/4th class girls, 3/4th class boys, 5/6th class girls and 5/6th class boys. The overall scoring was keen right up until the last two events and when the final scores were announced the following schools came out on top.

In the Girls 3/4th Class category, Scoil Colmcille, Kilmacrennan with a total of 96 points were the winners followed by Scoil Iosagain from Buncrana on 83 points.

In the Boys 3/4th Class category Scoil Colmcille , Letterkenny with a total of 106 points were winners followed by Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana on 100 points.

In the final two categories of 5/6th class boys and 5/6th class girls Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana did the double winning the girls section with 98 points followed by SN Naomh Dúigh, Annagry on 88, in the boys category they were convincing winners with 124 points followed by Scoil Colmcille , Letterkenny on 108points.

This is the second year of the primary schools sports hall athletics in Donegal and great credit is due to everyone who supported the four regional events at local level and the county finals in the Aura on Friday 8th March.

Donegal Sports Partnership and Athletics Ireland are the driving force behind the coordination of the programme which started back in November 2012 with a teacher / coach training workshops across the county. The Donegal Athletics Board and the local clubs are also to be congratulated for their enthusiastic support at local level and for the county final. Thanks also to members of Letterkenny AC and students from Letterkenny Institute of Technology, TY group in the Abbey Voc School, Donegal Town who provided students from their sports programme's to work as officials at local and county final events.

The winning teams now go forward to represent Donegal at the national semi finals at IT Sligo on Thursday 14th March where they will meet the winners from Leitrim, Roscommon and Galway with the National Finals scheduled for the 21st March in IT Athlone.

09 Mar 2013 - Cara Bundoran '10' Mile Road Race

Today's Cara Bundoran '10' was a huge success. There were 1124 entries, a 40% increase on last years race. Conditions for the race were cold with an easterly breeze but dry unlike most of the rest of the country. Organisation, hospitality, results service, stewarding were first class. The vast majority of the athletes taking part were from local fit4life groups and local training groups. The men's 10 mile was won by Sligo AC athlete Richard Gorman in a time of 55.48secs who broke away from the leading group of 4 at the 9 mile mark . the group included Pauric McKinney, Conor Gallagher and Paul Ward. Local Ballyshannon girl Fiona Stack was an impressive winner of the women’s section in a time of 62,10.

At a very pleasant and enjoyable social occasion on Sunday evening last in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town the club recognised the numerous achievements of club members during 2012. Over one hundred members and friends attended and heard Chairman Paul O’Gara summarise a most successful year before making presentations. Paul congratulated and thanked all who represented the club during 2012. From the juvenile athlete at local level, to the master athlete who ran a local 5k to those that contested National X/C and marathon to the club athletes that represented Ireland with distinction at World Junior, Europa Cup and schools International and British Championships’, Paul also recognised and praised ‘the numerous coaches who give so much of their time and expertise, club sponsors and in particular Cara Pharmacy, the media, and the local community support received during 2012’. 19 Feb 2013 - Mary McLoone excels at Irish Indoors in Athlone

Mary McLoone, joined the club as an Under 12 juvenile athlete, and has subsequently progressed to dominate underage and Senior Irish athletes in the Triple Jump over a ten year period. On Sunday in Athlone IT’s magnificent indoor International arena she was involved in a nail biting competition before going onto to win with a best combination of 12.48m-9cm ahead of Caoimhe King from Mayo. On Saturday it was an equally close encounter when she pushed Kelly Proper from Waterford to within 5cm when finishing 2nd in a great Long Jump competition. Mary, currently a primary teacher in Glenswilly NS, had her Dad Pat and family in support over the weekend in Athlone, a role they played so many times over the years in transporting Mary to twice weekly training sessions in Donegal Town and to major competitions all over Ireland. Dunkineely’s Mark McGuinness ran a PB of 9mins 3secs in the 3k, a race won by John Travers in a European qualifying time; Barry Quigg from Carrick high jumped 1.85m, narrowly missing at 1.90m and Enniskillen’s Conal Mahon triple jumped 13metres. 19 Feb 2013 - Athletics Ireland National Awards at Tullamore Court Hotel

The Tullamore Court Hotel was the venue on Saturday night for the cream of the countries young athletics talent when the annual Athletics Ireland awards were staged. It was a most enjoyable and relaxed occasion with the athletes families and friends plus numerous dignitaries in attendance. Laghey’s Kelly McGrory received the Donegal Athlete of the year award while Donegal Town’s Karl Griffin, because of his outstanding achievements in 2012, received the Robin Sykes Award. Well done to both, a great honour for athletes, their families and Tir Chonaill AC.

19 Feb 2013 - Ulster Schools Cross Country Finals at Mullusk

Mullusk on Wednesday last was the venue for the Ulster Schools Cross Country Finals. Congratulations to Mark McGuinness [Senior] 7th and Daniel Gallagher [Intermediate] 6th both qualifying for Irish Schools Finals on the Saturday, 9th March. Hopefully the course for the Irish Finals at the University of Ulster in Jordanstown will be a little kinder and athlete friendly.

 

 

 

19 Feb 2013 - Primary Schools SHA

On Wednesday last, 300 young athletes from St Macartans, Bundoran, Scoil Aodh Rua agus Nuala, St Francis, Barnesmore, Fintragh NS Killybegs, Carrick NS and Glencolmcille, participated in a regional final of SHA. From reports it was a most enjoyable experiences for all with the winning schools progressing to County Finals in the Aura in early March. Thanks to all the schools for participating to the teachers for giving the pupils an enjoyable introduction to athletics and to the fifteen club officials who ran the competition so efficiently.

The organising committee of the Cara Bundoran 10, scheduled for Saturday 9th March, report a huge entry, [over 1,000 walkers and runners expected to participate], excellent organisation, double Olympian Danny McDaid as official starter, over €4,000 in prizes, in addition to the 10mile distance, a new race over 10k, team prizes, young athletes races, outstanding hospitality, charities SVP and Cancer Society to benefit.

Local club groups are preparing for the event and it was so encouraging to find 50 athletes from Sligo, Leitrim joining the local Tir Chonaill Group on Saturday morning last at 8.30am for a dry run of the course. Well done to all and thanks to organisor/coach Paddy Donoghue.

 

 

 

19 Feb 2013 - Marie Rooney continues to master at National Indoors

On Saturday week last it was the turn of the Masters to experience the new state of the art indoor facility in Athlone. Tir Chonaill’s Marie Rooney had another outstanding competitive weekend when she added three National Medals to her ever increasing tally. The Ballyshannon woman won the walk, was 2nd in the 3000, and 3rd in the 1500m. Marie who captained county and club cross country teams to gold and silver medal performances the previous weekend in Derry was re-elected treasurer at last week’s club AGM. For good measure she also assists weekly coaching with the North Sligo club at Grange, a definition of commitment.

Fellow Ballyshannon man Paul Ward, ran 9mins 34secs, 3000m in a hotly contested race. John Cannon was pleased with his 4th, 1500m and 6th 800m finishes. The Ardara man was experiencing indoor running for the first time. Jackie Harvey, the final Tir Chonaill member, was also pleased with her 4th place finish in the 800m.

Meanwhile in the final race of the Lifford 5k series, Ardara man Donal Haughey, who recently returned to the competitive scene and trains with the clubs Donegal Town fit4life group, was an impressive winner of his category, while Jackie Harvey filled runners up spot in her class. On Sunday the National Junior and U23 Indoor Championships was again more success and headlines for club athletes. Kelly McGrory, runs a PB of 7.90secs in the 60m and finishes 5th while two hours later she battles her way to the 200m Final where she finishes 3rd in 25.78secs.

Emma Brady secures a silver medal in the Triple Jump;

Kate McGowan finishes 4th in the Long Jump and 60m Hurdles;

Barry Quigg clears 1.90m for bronze;

Conal Mahon got out to 13 metres in the Triple jump for silver;

Mark McGuinness runs 4mins 11.58secs in the 1,500m.

Our juveniles also took in the Ulster/ANI Indoor Championships in Magherafelt on Saturday and had a number of exciting and medal winning performances.

05 Feb 2013 - Club Masters Team’s lead the way at Gransha

Tír Chonaill’s Master athletes recorded a number of outstanding performances at the 'Irish Masters and Intermediate Cross Country Championships' at Gransha, Derry, on Sunday last. Club teams finished 2nd, 6th and 11th while individuals filled top three positions and were members of scoring Donegal Winning Teams.

The women’s M4 team made a remarkable breakthrough and club history when battling through a muddy and flat course to score 260pts and secure silver winning medals - the first time Tír Chonaill has won team Cross Country Championship medals at National level in the Masters category. Marie Rooney led the charge with a superb 3rd place finish in her category and an overall 44th /18mins.42secs, place finish followed by Jackie Harvey,63rd/19mins29secs, Anne Donoghue,74th/20mins 24secs and Bernie McNeely,79th/21mins 04secs. Marie and Jackie were also members of the scoring four Donegal winning squad.

The men’s M4 team also recorded a top six and a really great team team performance. Led by club team captain Richard McCarthy,93rd/29mins.00secs, Donal Haughey,107th/29mins49secs,John Cannon,113rd/30mins5secsand Johnnie Ward,133/33mins30secs they finished within 25 pt's of the bronze winning team. This Men’s Masters race had over 200 starters. Richard was a scoring member of the Donegal silver medal winning team.

Paul Ward, competing in the M3 category finished in 31st place/25mins28secs - another top class performance.

The clubs, Women’s M3 team finished 11th overall. Led by Philomena Gallagher, 42nd/18mins 27secs and supported by Sharon McGowan,53rd/19mins 5secs,Linda Ward,57th/19mins 12secs,Caroline Spratt, 66th/19mins 50secs, Loretta Cullen, 77th/20mins58secs, Eileen Ward, 78th/21mins 1sec. Congrats and well done to all.

On Thursday last the Ulster Schools District Cross Country Championships were held in Dungannon. Congrats to the athletes from St Catherine’s, Killybegs and the Abbey Vocational School Donegal Town who made the long journey. Excellent individual prformances from Mark McGuinnes ,winner of the Senior Boys and Daniel Gallagher, winner of the Intermediate Boys and Mark Boyle.The Ulster Schools finals take place in Mullusk on Wed 13th February.

 

 

 

05 Feb 2013 - Karl Griffin at Leinster Open Indoor Championships in Athlone

Karl Griffin travelled on Saturday to the Leinster Open Indoor Championships in Athlone and ran another outstanding time and performance in the 800m. In a most competitive paced race he recorded 1min 51.03secs.- a B qualification time for the European Juniors in July. Athletics Ireland requie an athlete to record 2 x B times or 1 x A to qualify for the continental c/ships. Daren McBrearty, LAC, won the race in 1mins 50.53secs with Shane Fitzsimmons, Mullingar 3rd 1min 52.27secs.

Athletics Ireland are delighted to announce the Juvenile All-Stars for 2012 as selected by the Juvenile Competition Committee. The awards ceremony which is sponsored by Tipperary Crystal will be held in the Tullamore Court Hotel on Saturday the 16th February. Congratulations to Tir Chonaill’a Kelly McGrory, on her numerous top class performance during 2012. She receives the Donegal Nomination and to Karl Griffin, who will receive the Robin Sykes Award for outstanding performance during 2012.

The clubs well attended AGM took place in Dorrian’s Ballyshannon on Friday night last. It was a most positive meeting where the numerous competitive, coaching, development, and administrative highlights of 2012 were recognised and new plans agreed to tackle the many challenges the club faces going forward, full report next week.

 

 

 

29 Jan 2013 - Warm Weather Training in the Algarve

January 2013 has certainly come in with a bang for Tír Chonaill AC athletes and officials. The New Year was rang in with a group of 25 flying off to an eight day warm weather training camp in the Algarve.

Reports are positive that all enjoyed themselves, did some training, experienced a world class training facility, met and exchanged ideas with athletes and coaches from all over Europe. Some even got sun tans. Thanks to the organisers, led by club coach Richard McCarthy, for all their work, ensuring that the trip was such a success. Plans are been put in place for the 2014 trip.

 

 

 

29 Jan 2013 - Athletics Ireland Indoor Games at the Indoor arena at Athlone IT

It was back home again for training and competition and on last weekend for many club athletes/officials to experience the state of the art Indoor arena at Athlone IT. The Athletics Ireland Indoor Games on Sunday last lived up to its high billing and performances did justice to the setting with numerous world class performances coming from the International fields assembled. It was a memorable, enjoyable and motivational day on so many fronts. Irish athletics took a gigantic step forward in Athlone today.

Summary

(1) A world class new indoor arena - yes down to the last detail - an athlete and spectator friendly environment, fast surface, professional and efficiently run meet - thanks to all who put the fields together and the numerous officials that ensured we had an unforgettable experience

(2) All 2000 seats filled by a knowledgeable and appreciative crowd

(3) International fields in many events with athletes from Spain, Germany, Holland, Denmark, UK joining Irish to record numerous best times/performances ever recorded in this country

(4) Highlights - numerous - Brian Gregan runs world best time of 46.08ses in 400m, Rob Heffernan, walks world class time in the 3k, three Spaniards get under 8mins in a most competitive and exciting 3k, Young Brit smashes British U20/Junior 1500m record - Darren McBrearty, LAC, runs very well here for 3rd in 3mins 45secs - just outside European Indoor Qualification time; Karl Griffin, Tír Chonaill recovers from an unfortunate trip/push and near fall at the bell in the 800m to fight back for 2nd place behind Jansen of Denmark in an excellent time 1min52.04secs.

(5)North West locals mixed it with the best. Anne Marie McGlynn, Lifford AC, finished 3rd in the women’s 1500m, Mary McLoone Tír Chonaill 2nd in the Long Jump and leads club mates Kate McGowan, Kelly McGrory, Louise Harvey to a record breaking and winning 1min 45secs - 4 x 200m relay; Patricia Boyle Cranford finishes 2nd in the triple jump, Kate McGowan, in her first run over the 60m Hurdles finishes 2nd while Louise Harvey fills 4th finishing place. Kelly McGrory, Tír Chonaill, wins her 60m heat/race in a PB time of 8.01secs and 2nd in the 200m - 26.04secs.

Earlier this week Kelly was nominated/selected as Athletics Ireland Donegal Juvenile Athlete of the Year 2012. Presentation takes place in Tullamore in three weeks’ time. Emma Brady, 10.40 Triple Jump, Barry Quigg 1.90m High Jump, Conal Mahon, Triple and Long and Christopher Doherty, Pole Vault all can be happy with their first visit to Athlone.

Multi Events

On Saturday, Mark Boyle and Christopher O’Loughlan experienced the five discipline pentathlon for the first time and came away very happy with their performances. The U17/18 Youth event found both finishing in the middle of the field with Marks best performances coming in the High Jump - 1.54m and 800m 2mins 17secs while Christopher’s highlight was the Long Jump.

29 Jan 2013 - Achievement Awards

January is the time of year for recognising the achievements of 2012. Club athletes were recognised at a number of locations. A well attended and superbly organised Donegal Co Board function at the Finn Valley recognised the numerous high achievers, including Olympians, Major Championships participants and National winners. Karl Griffin, Irish Youth Under 18 - 800m record holder and Kate McGowan, who smashed the Celtic 80m Hurdles record were both recognised. On Friday last at the Donegal Sports Star Awards function in Letterkenny, Kate McGowan, received the Best Secondary School Girl Award while her school, Abbey Vocational School, took the prestigious Co Councils Chairman’s Cup as top Donegal Sports School 2012. During the week the Athletics Ireland Juvenile Awards were announced. Kelly Mc Grory, via her numerous outstanding performances at National and International levels during 2012 was voted Donegal Athlete of the Year. The Awards ceremony takes place in Tullamore in mid February. Congrats to all and to the numerous club coaches/parents who support behind the scene. A beaming Richard McCarthy at training last Thursday night pulled a flight ticket to Boston from his pocket. He was off to see nephew David compete on Saturday in an Indoor Grand Prix mile. The new American star Rupp won in an incredible time of 3min 51 sec's with David in 2nd place in 3mins 57secs. The sub 4 min's mile is no longer a barrier.
