National League in Santry Round 1

Sunday, 26 May 2013

On Sunday last club athletes experienced sunshine for the first time this summer when Rd.1 of the National Track and Field Championships was held in Santry Stadium. The men in the Division 1 category and the women in the Premier category recorded a number of fine performances and will look forward to Rd.2, scheduled for Sligo in mid July with possibilities of qualification for top eight placings and a league final position. The women’s team finished joint 4th while the men are in 9th place.

Summary of performances;
Kelly Mc Grory recorded an impressive win in the demanding 400m Hurdles (63.62secs) while Marie Rooney also gained maximum points when recording a victory in the 1500m Walk (8.58.67). Hannah Campbell cleared 2.50m for 2nd in the Pole Vault while Kate McGowan went close to a EYOF qualification with a time of 14.71secs in the 100m Hurdles and followed up with an excellent 5.60m for 2nd in the Long Jump.

A very young men’s squad had fine performances from Christopher Doherty, 1st Pole Vault 3.60m, Barry Quigg, 1st 110m Hurdles and 2nd High Jump 1.85m and Paul Donovan, 2nd Hammer 45.72m. It is most encouraging to see a men’s squad from the club again entering and being competitive in the National League. Well done to all and to team managers David Doherty and Jackie Harvey for all their support work ensuring that both teams performed to the maximum.
