McCarthy, Griffin and Mahon, 1,2,3 at Indoor Nationals

Sat 15/ Sun 16 Feb 2014

Karl Griffin, Conal Mahon and David McCarthy, three athletes with strong local connections, all made the National Sports pages earlier this week. The threesomes were medal winners at the National Indoor Seniors, held in the International Indoor Arena at AIT on Saturday/Sunday last.

Karl Griffin, currently on an elite athletics scholarship in UCD, qualified for Sunday afternoons 800m final via an impressive and controlled heat victory on Saturday evening. In a tactical and at times ‘bumpy and aggressive eight man final’ the Ballydevitt native worked his way to contest the lead as the race entered the final 200m lap. Niall Tuohy, Ferrybank, a training partner of Karl’s, controlled the race from the front, and over the final loop held off all attacks to win impressively in 1min 52.24secs against Karl’s 2nd/ 1min 52.82secs. The Donegal Town man, still only 18 years of age, adds this prestigious finish/medal to an already won silver of two years ago in the Odyssey, Belfast when he burst onto the Irish middle distance scene.

Conal Mahon, from Irvinstown and a former St Michaels Enniskillen student and club mate of Karl’s in Donegal Town, joined the Tír Chonaill jumps group three years ago and on Saturday evening added a first Senior Medal to his ever growing collection of National Awards. He lay in 5th position in a keenly contested Triple Jump competition as he prepared for his final attempt, result a new PB of 14.10metres and a bronze medal. Conal, a 2nd year student in NUIG, will now focus on bettering a long standing, Niall Sweeney, 14.47m County Triple Jump record.
